Poor Beverly, she's in a difficult position there. This internal dialogue shows clearly how she's struggling with herself...I can read that last line two ways...either in resignation or defiance.

She really is. I like to think of her last line as defiant, and almost proud (at least that's how I felt when I wrote it). :-)
