Little House

As you all know, we are in the process of building a tiny cabin in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It is approximately 120 square feet with a sleeping loft, a living room, a dining area a kitchen and a bathroom. It is entirely off the grid using water catchment and solar power. We are building it as a retreat, but we want to be ( Read more... )

I think it sounds great! My family sometimes teases me because I have suggested many times in the past how fond I am of the old european style cottages (and their wild rampant gardens), but to me that is just enough. Of course I would need more than one room since I do have a daughter, a husband, and will probably have more children, but less space is always good. It also less empty space to clean!

There is a home showcased in Little House on a Small Planet - less than 1000 square feet for a family of 5. Small spaces can be great for families especially if you make the best use of the space.

I loved my tiny little efficiency apt when I lived on the lake (before being married of course). it was nice to live in a small place esp because the outdoors was so breathtakingly beautiful.
here's to the hippie hut in the hills!

This is a wonderful idea for people who don't need a lot of space.

Me, well ... there are all these books.

If we can ever afford it, we would like to get a house-trailer to house some of the books. But we're talking about a household collection that exceeds some school or small-town libraries. There are over 25 bookcases here, plus 13 shelves in smaller configurations, plus two rooms upstairs with floor-to-ceiling shelves.

Although there are just two of us living in the house right now, we've had housemates in the past and would like to again. We're also a hub for community activity; if we shuffle the furniture around, we can fit 10-12 people into the dining room for a ritual.

TBH, I think I could probably get away with having a very small day-to-day living space. Bathroom, study, kitchen/dining, sleeping nook. However, I'd want quite a bit of storage, even if it was just racks of shelves which slid out of the wall.

A workshop might also be nice.

In our case, we have the tiny cabin but, as I mentioned, we also have 15 acres. There is an exisiting structure, an old barn, that we use for storage right now. The barn also has a small room that we are converting into a studio. Eventually we will build other living spaces - probably outdoor ones - large gathering areas with a firepit. A tree house/deck. And I would love to live somewhere with a villageof Tumbleweed Houses.
