I just finished the Hunger Games series after holding off on reading it for awhile, so this is totally useless if you haven't read them. But if you have, come talk to me:
I pretty much agree with EVERYTHING you felt. Finnick.. *SOOOB* I had to reread that part because I couldn't figure out what happened, I think its because I read REALLY fast and skim mostly.
As for fic, there's few and far between that are wonderful BUT
kenoshachick writes MY Mockingjay, I actually read hers before the book came out, she's on a lil hiatus with it at the moment but its fucking BRILLIANT. I love her AU ish fic My First Date With Katniss Everdeen told from Peeta's pov and she just has this.. this total Peeta gift, its like she's in his head lol
thank you for the recs, Boo boo! Definitely going to check them out.
I had to read Finnick's death two times and then read ahead, then go back and read it again to actually believe he wasn't coming back. And I felt like it was just a blip on Katniss' radar... she didn't really mourn him much, which was even worse.
I agree with everything you said. It's like you read my mind. And Finnick....he was one of top ten characters in the books...the ending just left me depressed. Also, I wonder if anyone out there is reading Finnick/Katniss fics. I read a really, really good oneshot a few months back; but for the love of me can't remember ANYTHING about it. So annoying.
hmmm Finnick/Katniss.... I think if written well I could believe it. They both went through such similar things.
And yeah... the ending left me totally depressed. Felt like these characters were wrecked beyond repair, even if the epilogue tried to suggest otherwise.
I recently asked for book recs too. THESE are the books people recommended to me.
Also, not the on list:
- The Mark of Zorro by Johnston McCulley (this is the book that inspired the show and movies) - City of Thieves by David Benioff - Once Upon a Winter's Night by Dennis L McKiernan (if you enjoy fantasy, give this a shot. I adore it. Also, it's the first book it the series)
Lastly, I recommend The Mortal Instrument Series, if you haven't read those. The main male character reminds me A LOT of Draco (HP). I'm assuming it's because the author wrote HP fanfic before she published the series. Anyway, don't let that deter you from reading them. The books are well written for a YA series.
*FACEPALM* CLEARLY, I FAIL (which shouldn't surprise me because I've been reading things wrong lately.) :S
TMI-- I've been assured by multiple people that it's not really incest (which is why I'm reading). One person started yelling at me "STOP REFERRING TO THEM AS THE INCEST BOOKS. IT'S NOT!" But I'm still on the first book, so I don't really know what the incest comments are all about.
yeah i mean, that's what I heard to, that's its not really incest. But just having that as a potential plot device icks me out. It may be unfair, but that's like my hard limit, y'know?
I absolutely whined and cried when Finnick died. Annie and Finnick were my OTP. The only consolation was Annie being pregnant.
I actually loved Catching Fire the most. I think because I was expecting it to suck that they were going back in, but it surprised me and it became my favorite part of the trilogy.
I hope they cast right. I do not want Haymitch to be a hot forty something that I want to nom on (RDJ, JDM, even Hugh Laurie). My ideal casting is Brendan Gleeson, or anybody in that realm. Seriously also, please cast somebody genuinely hot and handsome as Finnick. Those are the only two people I car about in terms of cast.
Lol, tl;dr: THG is good, Hollywood, please don't fuck it up.
For a second there, I thought it said Rupert as Finnick, which I screamed out NOOOO in the room. Idk about Rupert as Peeta. Iprefer someone less known for almost all the leads. Also, I don't find him super attractive.
Haymitch is a heavy, alcoholic who is washed up. The only reason why people thought of Hugh Laurie as him is because he plays House, the definition of grouchy.
OMG NO to Rupert as Finnick. And I don't want to see Peeta be a hottie, myself. He's kind of stocky and certainly not a Finnick or Gale. Those need to be some attractive mens.
I felt that way about Mockingjay after it had lingered around in my mind. Mostly, I hated what she did to Peeta. It didn't make any sense...it felt like a plot device to keep the love triangle going. It felt so obvious and natural that it would be Peeta to me, much like Hermione/Ron felt the same. And after the end of Catching Fire...after Gale was willing to give up everything Katniss asked of him for the Republic because it mattered more than her....how could it NOT be Peeta?
And Prim. Dear God. So unnecessary for me. I think I'd rather Katniss have died than Prim. What's the point of everything Katniss did if Prim dies? Prim was the only truly good character left in the books. Basically, every single character I cared about besides Peeta and Katniss died. And in a huge way they died too because they're never, ever going to recover from that madness. So...I don't get it. I loved the first two. But Mockingjay just left me feeling depressed.
yes yes yes! everything you said. I feel like every character I cared about got destroyed in some way. I guess maybe she was trying to show the realities of war but what about hope? Why so bleak?
For a little while, even though I'd been spoiled from the start about her ending up with Peeta, I shipped Gale/Katniss. I love Peeta's character (even if he's a little dumb/naive sometimes) but Gale and Katniss were the right amount of wrecked for each other. They knew their priorities, they were one in the same. Of course, then Gale went totally OOC in the second half of MJ, then just slunk away. It's unforgivable not only what SC did to Prim, but to associate Gale with it.
The ending was way too depressing. I wasn't expecting HEA, but at least until Prim died there was some lingering feeling of redemption for Katniss. I'm surprised she got away with such a bleak ending.
The thing about war, is that it ruins and ravages and tears worlds apart. But you have to figure that you're fighting for SOMETHING. I mean, The Civil War ripped America in two and it was devastating and pitted brother against brother and all these terrible things...but there was a light at the end of that tunnel. It wasn't a quick rebuilding process, but there was hope and fight and...bah. I was pretty bitter about Mockingjay. I thought it was a character assassination all round. And yes, Katniss killed Coin, but then what? She went through war and she shouldn't have to keep fighting, but what? Prim dies so she just gives up? Why should I do anything differently as a reader? Sigh.

TMI series--isn't there an maybe/maybe not incest plot in that? I don't know if I could handle that...

I'm mostly just pissed about Peeta being ruined.

Yes. And Katniss. and Gale. and then she killed off Finnick and Prim so really, who are we left with?
I totally agree with you about hope. In a convoluted way, war is about the future. Prim was that future and now... ARGH.
