I'm still upset that it took New Orleans turning into a third-world country before anyone noticed that the average annual per capita income of the area is a little over $17,000, and something ridiculous like 27% are (were? It seems this storm may have been a disastrous equalizer) below the poverty line. Nobody cared about that before the hurricane blew through. Nobody cared about these people before Katrina, and they likely would have died in a similar fashion, but in smaller numbers
