Rinoa was only stopping in on her way to the library. She had an idea. Actually it was sort of Jono's idea. And maybe it would help with the files, which okay weren't as important as the disappearances, but she couldn't do anything about the disappearances and she could do something about the files. And on that basis, she had actually convinced herself to get a few hours' sleep last night, and had showered this morning, and was now going to pop in to Squall's room to get his thoughts.

... okay, to drag him into helping. It was what she did.

All of that changed the instant she popped her head in and saw the state he was in, sitting on his bed. She was by his side a moment later.

"Who?" she asked. Who had the abyss taken from them now? Quistis? Not ... not Ellone?

"...Me," he answered flatly. "You. A whole other universe, with another Garden." He gave her a blank look and held out the phone, which was still prompting him to press a button to save, delete, or replay the message.

"I don't ..." She frowned at him, unable to follow. They were in danger?

She listened to the message, gasping at first at the voice. It was definitely Squall's, though he sounded ... older. More mature.

Ellone ... Ellone was gone. Quistis, possibly, as well. And she was -- on a balcony, standing against the storm?

The sounds of breaking glass made her flinch, and the quiet sob and desperation in Squall's voice cut her to the quick. But the worst sound was the deafening silence at the end.

"You ..." Words were not coming. Tears, but not words. Oh, Hyne. "How did ..."

"I don't know," Squall answered. "I... It might be the other Squall. The one who taught here. It might just be the island's idea of a joke. Maybe both."

He wasn't crying. He wasn't anything. He just felt sort of empty inside.
