Help with Rice?

Hello, crock pot enthusiasts!

I have a recipe for arroz con pollo that calls for 1 cup of rice. Does this mean it's cooked or uncooked?

There's a fair amount of liquid in the recipe, so I'm thinking uncooked, but I wanted to check and see what you all think. I checked the tags but only saw recipes with rice that had cooking instructions. Thanks

Uncooked. It will absorb the liquid as it cooks.

I highly, highly, highly reccomend that you cook the rice outside the crock and then add it in toward the end of the cooking cycle.

I made a rice and lentil soup that turned into rice and lentil mush because the rice basically disentegrated from the long cooking time.

Use all the liquid all day with all other recipes, but add the rice with less than 45 minutes to go (on high), otherwise you will have mushy goop rice.

I recommend replacing the liquid in the recipe with 4-6oz of a light-colored beer (Puerto Rican is best), and the remainder with chicken stock. Add in 1/2 a packet of Goya Sazon for delicious seasoning.

(I usually do this all on the stove, as rice can be tempermental, but it can be done in the crock if you add the rice late.)

try converted rice? lafraise February 28 2010, 19:25:59 UTC
I have a crock pot cookbook that says that converted rice (in the US something like Uncle Ben's) holds up the best. I've never tried it though. But yeah, add it at the last minute possible and turn off the crock once it is fully cooked.
