Princeton notifying

Feb 17, 2011 19:55

No grad cafe thread, but lots of rejections (and one acceptance) on the results board. I'm posting because my best friend received a waitlist offer today as well - which seems to suggest that Princeton is taking care of all their business in one fell swoop. The results board acceptance lists an email notification, which would indicate a divergence ( Read more... )

applied, but didn't get in (I made a thread earlier, but deleted it because I felt I was clogging the board up too much! I figured they get so many apps that someone else was bound to make another post.) Not a big deal at all, they were my last choice and not a particularly good fit.

I'm still sitting on my hands waiting for Cornell, though!

Haha, you're not clogging up the board at all!

Also, you probably already know this, but last year Cornell notified on Feb 25... and I think I remember chatter to the effect that they tend to notify closer to the end of February. So, unfortunately, you likely have another week or more to wait.

Princeton's a small enough program that fit is perhaps an EVEN bigger issue there than at other schools.

I'm crossing my fingers for you for Cornell!

Yep, I figured I wouldn't be hearing back from Cornell until next week (would it be sad if I said I had a word doc with a table listing the notification dates of all my programs for the past 5 years?). I'm also glad that their decisions tend to be released by e-mail--I'm going to be in NYC all week doing some archival work for my thesis, and probably wouldn't be able to answer the phone as easily as I normally could!

Even if I don't get into Cornell (and since I applied to so few schools, I'm glad that this leg of the application process is almost over for me regardless), I still have some fantastic options. Cornell's just an outstanding fit for my work and two of my mentors did their PhDs there and have both stressed how much they loved the program. It's already going to be a difficult choice, and potentially throwing Cornell into the mix will definitely make it even more difficult!

I'm just glad all my midterms are now over... tomorrow night I can finally go celebrate!

I decided not to apply to Princeton at the last minute, because I was scared that I had too many top schools on my list. However, given the rampant discussion on Grad Cafe and elsewhere, I have to say that I appreciate their method of giving everyone notice at once. It's merciful in comparison to the "implicit rejection" based on Grad Cafe results that I feel is imminent from Vanderbilt, maybe Chicago also.

Yeah, I haven't heard from Vanderbilt either and assume that means rejection. I don't think there have been enough Chicago posts on GradCafe for you to entirely count them out yet though. All of these schools do things in such odd ways that there's no telling!

Ahhh the voice of reason re: Chicago. I think I'm just psyching myself out. However, it would seem that the best hope for Vandy at this point is a waitlist. It's too bad for me because I have family there and love that city more than anything! At least we're all in this crummy boat together, I've been lurking on this board for months but the stress of waiting finally pushed me to post.

Implicit rejections are tricky. It's hard not to be anxious and even angry about it, but keep in mind that there are actually a surprising number of factors outside the control of the department and the admissions committee. In any case, I will just hope that you hear GOOD news :)
