Body image: a hypothetical question

Jul 05, 2009 17:43

A stranger walks up to you and says, "I just wanted you to know, I find you attractive."

Your reaction:

1. Why, thank you!
2. How dare you!
3. something else

Please explain your answer.  Thanks!  (I'll explain why I'm asking later.)

Bill

What I usually say is "Thank you."

How I actually feel about it depends on where I am and the "vibe" I get off the stranger. I might feel creeped out, or curious, or flattered.

In general I would much rather be given a more specific compliment by a stranger, and one that doesn't sound like the person is trying to tell me about their sexual reaction to me, which "I find you attractive" sounds like to me.

E.g., I might prefer "I like your outfit" or "You have nice eyes," or "You are beautiful."

I often wonder how to say these things to strangers, too. As a woman I know how to compliment another woman, but I don't know how to compliment a guy without making him uncomfortable.

Thanks, Stef. Guys can be creepy sometimes.

Regarding complimenting a guy, you could compliment his shirt, if indeed you like it. That's pretty safe. (Those are pretty much the only comments I get from strangers, unless I'm in a show.)
