For Lux

It's pretty much the best idea he's had in ages. What's more amazing is that he didn't really have to work to sell it to Lux. It's going to be fun - tent, campfire, camp food. Just him and his kid and twenty four hours with nobody else. A big bonding experience. He's kissed Kate goodbye and shouldered his back-pack ( Read more... )

Make no mistake, Lux really hates camping. The last thing she'd been doing before she got dropped on the island was camping, and she'd been all but forced into it by Cate and Tasha, who apparently equated it with some kind of rustic bonding experience. Ill-advised teacher makeouts aside, she'd been miserable the entire time and really isn't keen on reliving the experience.

But it's Baze, who somehow manages to be even more convincing than Cate when he puts his mind to it, all eager puppy eyes and enthusiasm. This is how he talked her into basketball and a dozen other things she never would have done. He's her dad, and he's here when so many other people she knows don't have family on the island at all.

So, she's tromping through the jungle with a massive pack on her back and a beleagured look on her face, but she's here, on board the Nate Bazile Camping Express.

"I have underwear and a toothbrush," she replies. "If I forgot anything else, I'll manage."

"You should come prepared for these things," says Baze, even though he's pretty sure that the reason that he can't shake the feeling that he's forgotten something is because he has forgotten something. Hopefully nothing crucial.

"We just need to go far enough that nobody's going to be wandering through the campfire."

"I'm pretty sure the light and heat would probably keep most people from doing that," Lux reminds him with a sidelong glance. If it was her and Jason camping so that they could spend the time making out, it would be different, but she's on a golly-gee wholesome outing with her dad. Who cares if someone happens upon their campsite?

"I say we just go with the next clearing," she suggests, hefting her bag further up her shoulders.

"You're really not getting into the spirit of this, Lux," says Baze, but they both know that he'll do what she asks him, because he always does. So the next clearing will do fine.

"It's really not going to be so bad, Lux," he promises. "It's going to be awesome."

He knows better than to promise her.
