To be called upon to assist in solving a case was not unusual for Light. Granted, his father often stated that he needed to focus on school and do the best he could in class before thinking of joining the force...But school was easy, and ridiculously boring, and he had no troubles staying on top of his work and assisting his father with the odd case or three.
To be called upon like this, so suddenly, without warning...Well, Light had working ears and eyes, and he would have had to have neither to not know what this was about. Everyone had heard about the mass murders of criminals. Everyone knew about the one called 'Kira', the one attempting to wipe out criminals.
Perhaps to make a better world? Light could see it. Force people to not be a criminal, or they would be put to the death...
But no. This man, this Kira, he was a criminal and it was his job to help stop him. And he would--it was a promise to himself. The world would be made into a better place...but not in this way. And he would catch the man playing god, no matter what

L couldn't help the fact that he was rather bored waiting for the detectives to show up. They... weren't who he would normally pick, to be honest. Soichiro, he was nice. Confident. Hard-working. There was nothing special about him though, unless you countered his determination. L had seen lots of determination though and sometimes it just didn't work out for the better.
Then there was Matsuda, and Matsuda was just an idiot. No if, ands, or buts. Yet, L couldn't rule him our completely as that would be rather arrogant and stupid of him. People like Matsuda had a tendency to surprise people. Next was Aizawa and L had his doubts about his loyalty to the team but oh well, he stayed. L would make sure to keep an eye on him though

Whatever his expectations when he followed his father into the hotel and up to the room--but only after relinquishing his cell phone, and security was ridiculously tight here, wasn't it?--what he found was not it.
He had been expecting the every elusive L, the detective the world knew only by a single letter and by his skills. The fact that security was so strong here only supported that conclusion, and Light knew that L was working on this case. It was a simple deduction from there, that the person before them was L.
...or maybe not. The young man was slouched over, posture terrible, hands in his pockets and...was he barefoot? The dark circles under his eyes spoke of insomnia, or a simple habit of not sleeping, and the messy hair gave Light the impression that the young man had quite honestly just rolled out of bed to meet them. Not a particularly good first impression, if Light was entirely honest with himself. though there was something about those eyes...calculating, unblinking, sharp...they nearly made Light reconsider

L just lifted a foot to scratch idly at his ankle and gave a nod. "Yes, I'm him." Simple, effective by the looks of surprise on the detectives' faces. Then, suddenly, they were greeting him. Taking out their police badges and stating their names and wow, L thought, he couldn't believe how stupid they were. A raise of the eyebrow and his flat expression stayed as he simple raised a hand, "shot" them, and simply said, "Bang
