Honestly, are you surprised? The attendance was going way down each year - by next year it would have been 75 people in a high school auditorium, the way they were going. Also, if they hadn't centered the cons so very much on the films, it would have had a better chance of lasting. (And if Creation hadn't been so eager to milk the cash cow.) Something revolving around the whole Tolkien oeuvre might have lasted longer.
But there is a kind of poetic rightness to it, actually: three books, three films, three years of cons, neh?. Oh well. As the Buddhists say, all is impermanence.
I'm very glad that I got to attend a few and that we still also have Chicago, even if no con stuff will be there! (am really looking forward to seeing people there!)
