When we talk about the Sacrifice of Jesus we fixate on the crucifixion. Certainly, Jesus's death was a part of his Sacrifice but I believe it is a mistake to characterize this act as the entire Sacrifice of Jesus. The message isn't in Jesus' death, that was the exclamation point on his life. His life, His ministry and lessons, those are the point.
As a boy I heard my pastor preach on the topic of how random symbols can be. Had Christ been killed with a spear or a sword or by hanging, or in another time by firing squad...we'd worship those shapes rather than the cross.
