When we talk about the Sacrifice of Jesus we fixate on the crucifixion. Certainly, Jesus's death was a part of his Sacrifice but I believe it is a mistake to characterize this act as the entire Sacrifice of Jesus. What matters is not how Christ died, but how He lived. Both His life and His death were choices made of His free will. He could have bailed on it all at Gethsemane in the Garden. He didn't do that. He followed his ministry unto death.
The message isn't in Jesus' death, that was the exclamation point on his life. His life, His ministry and lessons, those are the point.

As a boy I heard my pastor preach on the topic of how random symbols can be. Had Christ been killed with a spear or a sword or by hanging, or in another time by firing squad...we'd worship those shapes rather than the cross.

Absolutely! It's not he act of baptism or confession that brings you closer to God but thinking in every aspect of your life, "What would Jesus do?" Are my morals, priorities, thoughts, beliefs in line with the way that Jesus lived his life for us?
