I'll be in and around the capitol, Charleston, for most of next week. Since it was either now or in January, I figured there would be less chance of bad weather if I made the trip now. I get home the evening of the 23rd.
The Clay Center (http://theclaycenter.org/) is a very nice facility, and WV has one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the entire US. It was designed by Cass Gilbert. There is a very nice, newly renovated museum in the capital complex too. Any or all of them would be nice diversions while you're there. I grew up in WV, and I understand the prejudices against the place. The national news media always goes to the southern coal fields to shoot stories about the poverty and ignorance, and that is about the only image most folks have ever seen.
