Well, you are welcome if you want! :)
The main your problem in Russia will be the lack of language skills. Unfortunately just a few russians speak English. In the rest... don't live in cheap hotels, don't show the money to everybody and don't drink with unknown people. As everywhere.
Credit cards - without problems in almost any shop, at any gas station, etc.; wifi in hotels and even sometimes in rented apartments and other joys of civilization. If you're lucky you'll find a bar, cafe or even restaurant with english-speaking staff. You may hope it but shouldn't expect it.

Oh yes, I don't advise you to go to Moscow - dirty, great, noisy city. You'd better select another one if you want to look at russia without stupid spending, without noise and without crowds of people which eternally hasten somewhere.

Ask me when you'll be ready to go and I'll tell you everything you want to know and maybe a bit more. :)

I have no idea what to tell you because I've never even been to Russia, let alone lived there. But the Russians I'd worked with in medicine (and there have been a lot) have been some of the most cut-throat, hardcore, toughest, and most intimidating people I've ever known. I'd never been so afraid of highers-up, not kidding. Maybe it's just my own experience but it felt like working with mafia heads. I was even scared shitless of the cleaning lady at this clinic where I worked! Also, the most amazing anatomist I'd ever known was Russian.

I don't know what to tell you about it in conclusion, maybe Russians are tougher people than Americans, you could probably survive in the States and have it easier?
