The fever-dreams had faded, but there was no escape from the pain. Norrington tried to scream, but his voice was gone.
"How long can ye live like this?" Jones asked. "Two days? Three?"
"Please," Norrington begged silently. "No."
"I can stop this, any time you want. You know the price. A hundred years before the mast."
He could bear no more. "Anything!"
"Done." Jones grasped the end of the spar and wrenched it out. He straightened, and smiled down at Norrington. "Though perhaps you should have considered how much a man can suffer, when he has no recourse in death."
