...every art tradition and subtradition develops conventions, but in many cases it can be good to shake them up. This is "nonconventional" identity porn, which makes it doubly awesome. Maybe triply.

AIIIEEE! Any use of Malone will pretty much guarantee that I'll love the fic, but this? This is sheer twisted genius. Make the investigation longer, ghange the ending so Mrs Dent didn't know about Janus, spun the story from there, add a goon or two, and you'd have one *hell* of a subversive noir film.

You've caught me. I'm not really a fan of film noir, aside from the costuming and cinematography. So when it veered off course I didn't really try to hard to correct it.
