I disagree with you about Rhys. The fact that Gwen would answer the phone at all while in the middle of a time-sensitive, undercover operation tells me that maybe she's prioritizing him TOO highly. Less so when she forgets to call him back, but that's forgivable, in my eye. I'm terrible at returning calls myself, though, so I might be more sympathetic than some.

Rex, rescuing Gwen and Jack from an assassin - who could certainly have killed Jack - shoots him in the throat just as he was about to tell them who he was working for. Oh, dear.

But that got me a new icon! :D

And Vera Juarez continues to be brilliant.

Totally; she's awesome. Except when she wore heels to the overflow hospital. Though that made me laugh all the harder at Gwen's shoe complaints later.

And, no. I don't see it as homophobic, mainly because I'm pretty sure Rex is going to get his comeuppance.

I'm not sure I understand you here.

I'm in two minds over the Rhys thing. Yes, there were times when Gwen genuinely couldn't speak to him, but a couple of times when she wasn't in the middle of an emergency situation I felt that she was putting him off rather abruptly. Nothing major; it just felt that she was less lovely-dovey and anxious to talk to him than last week, and I couldn't help noticing.

Except when she wore heels to the overflow hospital. Though that made me laugh all the harder at Gwen's shoe complaints later.

Yes; why do women ever wear high heels? It makes no sense at all to me. They're instruments of torture, purely and simply ( ... )

I'm 5'4" and am fine being short if it means not wearing heels. :-p Though that's actually about average for an American woman.

And ooh, I see what you mean now. It had not even slightly occurred to me that Rex would fall under Jack's spell, but I will be plenty amused if he does. However, I'm fine if Rex just learns to chill. After all, the "can't you be a bit less in-my-face?" idea IS homophobic in this case. You can tell Rex wouldn't be concerned about any of Jack's raunchy comments or jokes or interactions if they were hetero in nature; he's employing a double standard.

Not wanting two dudes to make out in front of you because you don't like seeing ANYONE make out is an acceptable use of "stop being in my face with that." Rex's behavior, not so much, as I see it. Not that Jack's helping by taunting him, but then, Rex's problems aren't his responsibility, either.

But that's just my opinion, ymmv, etc. I think Rex is chilling out already, though! Or just getting worn down.

Yes, you are right about Rex very likely having a double standard, so, yes, I'm giving him a pass where I shouldn't. I'm just hoping that he will get his comeuppance.

That was an interesting moment at the end of the episode, where Jack thanked Rex for saving him. I couldn't help wondering if it was genuine gratitude or part of a strategy of softening Rex up for some reason of Jack's, to do with the case or for his own agenda.

You have a good point of his sexuality being flattened out to just gay. I'm watching Torchwood with a family member who has never seen it before, and when I wondered aloud why they were portraying him as just into men, the family member said, "Really? He isn't gay?" So to new viewers it is giving that false impression.

Vera Juarez is my favorite new character this season. She has so much grit, yet that hard-nosed determination is tempered by a genuine compassion for her patients. Torchwood really does deliver some of TV's most badass female characters.

It is giving a false impression, and I'm surprised, because I do remember John Barrowman saying in interviews before Miracle Day started that all aspects of Jack's sexuality would be visible here: that we would see him with both men and women. Still, this is only episode four, so there's plenty of time.

Yes, Vera's fantastic, isn't she? In a quietly determined way - though she can definitely kick arse when she wants to. She's not all 'look at her, she's so fantastic', as we occasionally get with characters the writers want us to like. I do like Esther too, though: she's trying so hard, feeling out of her depth and making mistakes, yet showing that she does have her own strengths and they're invaluable.

I think that the writers are playing on the American view that bisexuality (or, in this case omnisexuality) doesn't exist, at least not for men. I'm not saying all Americans think this way, but I think most people who don't educate themselves on human sexuality all buy into the idea that at least for a man, if he's interested in another man, he must be gay ( ... )

I'm probably fairly close in age to your folks & so I know that attitude is rampant in our age group. But thankful there are young people like yourself who are both more tolerant & recognize there is more to sexuality than just 'straight' & 'gay'.
Like you I hope the writers do their best to help others understand that too but maybe I'm just too old & cynical because I'm not gonna hold my breath. Especially given some of the 'humor' that's been displayed in the first four episodes.

I thought Gwen's abruptness with Rhys was a bit strange, but I'm wondering if now they're on the run and on the other side of the country, maybe they're having a bit more trouble with the relays. Of course, his ability to call at the worst possible moments goes way back to series 1, so I'm thinking it might be a bit of an homage to that ( ... )

There was a lot to comment on, wasn't there? It feels as if a lot of ground is being covered in each episode; but then, the episodes are almost an hour without commercials. Take Monroe, for instance: introduced at the start of the episode, and by the end it felt as if she'd been around for quite some time. Horrible comeuppance, yeah, and worse than if she could actually die - but I couldn't help a bit of schadenfreude also ( ... )

I'm glad you mention Gwen and Jack's PhiCorp disguises. I wish we could have had maybe a solid minute of nothing but Gwen striding about in that outfit, with that hair, in those shoes. Maybe in slow motion, with nothing but music behind it. Good gravy, I'm still picking up bits of my jaw off the floor.

And Jack in his delivery boy outfit has been quite busy starring in a very special movie in my head.

But seriously? Whoever got Gwen all Joaned up deserves an Emmy. Spectacular.
