Oh God, how much longer can he carry on like this?

You never gloss over the hard questions, the real consequences of his being the last of his kind, and perhaps the only one to open his heart. A very moving portrait of someone who has to find help and comfort, but feels unable to ask for it - and Lauren and her family were brought beautifully to life. I find his irritating defence mechanisms so much easier to understand when I read your thoughtful portrait of the reality he's dealing with.

I think one of the hardest issues is that you couldn't really travel with him, go through those experiences, without a very deep bond developing. For that reason, there's a "ship" of some sort with every companion, and arguing about their validity is redundant.

Thank you so much. :) I always love reading your thoughtful commentary. And you're quite right: travelling with the Doctor is a very intimate experience, for all sorts of reasons. Even if there's more than one companion at a time (though when Five had three it might have been a bit different! ;) ).

Again, I'm so thrilled to hear that the descriptions of Lauren, and the Doctor's relationship with her, worked for you :) And, yes, all of that explains his defence mechanisms. He's been devastated once more, broken by losing someone he loved - and, worse, having had to kill her himself. Very hard, even when he knew there was nothing he could do to save her.

Thank you :)
