I agree that all those squee moments were pretty damn awesome, and I think a number of those would be on my top five as well. I am so glad that Rose's appearance in Partners in Crime was not leaked -- it's so rare to get a really genuine surprise like that!
And I completely agree with everything you say about fandom/ship wars. WE CAN ALL BE FRIENDS, DAMN IT!!!
And, yes, it's pretty amazing that Rose in PiC wasn't leaked. I'm assuming it was filmed out of doors, since the whole scene was exterior, so I have no idea how it is that the usual suspects didn't see Billie Piper on set. Regardless, it was brilliant :)
And the Doctor/Rose shippers did hug the Doctor/Martha shippers and the Jack/Gwen shippers did have an orgy with the Jack/Ianto shippers, and Donna was awesome through all of it, and ALL WAS WELL.
I have no idea how it is that the usual suspects didn't see Billie Piper on set.
Well, Rose does have her face turned away from the camera when Donna is talking to her, so maybe they used a stand-in for that, and then didn't film the bits with Billie Piper, when she's walking away, until later on, so people just assumed it was part of Turn Left/TSE/JE?
Oh, ye gods, I'd forgotten about the vomiting in Dead Man Walking. I think I subconsciously block it. Bodily functions are not my idea of humor, and nothing your body does should look like a power washer is involved. *shudder*
Heh. Donna doesn't surpass the TARDIS trio for me, but I went from dreading her to reluctantly respecting her as formidably organized to genuinely liking her. And then, just when she was super-cool, she was edited out. Yikes. On the one hand, I understand some of the reasoning from a TV-writing point of view. On the other hand, I'm getting tired of losing a companion every time he/she becomes awesome. I can't help thinking it's possible to have a season or two where a companion rocks without losing all possibility of plot.
Agreed re. bodily functions, which is probably why farting Slitheen made the list as well.
I adore my TARDIS trio, as you know, and I think with Nine nobody else could come remotely close. But Donna and Ten, as best friends running through time and space, are amazing :) I think the way I see it is that she's my favourite companion, whereas the others are my favourite team.
And, yes, I'd just like to keep a companion (and a Doctor) for more than one or two seasons!
I agree! I love that there was never any sexual tension with Donna - lots of love, but friendship-love. I like Martha, but I admit every once in a while her obvious pining got on my nerves. (Though it's all worth it for Jack's "You too, huh?" *g*) Donna's attitude is so refreshing.
I love that 'you too, huh?' moment. Adore it. Yes, Martha's obvious 'but why doesn't he love meeeee?' did irritate me, though I think the main reason why I don't love her as a companion the way I do Rose and Donna (and Jack) is that I never felt we got to understand her in the same way. Why did she go with the Doctor? She's close to qualifying as a doctor, something she seems to love, so why leave that behind? Why does she want to be a doctor, anyway? What motivates her? I knew a lot more about why Donna wanted to be with the Doctor, and what she liked and hated about her life, than I did about Martha.
Now I have to ask about "I guess so." Is it just that phrasing, or "guess" in any context where it's used like "suppose" or some other form of weak acquiescence?
I do my best, but there are things (like that) that I would simply never think to question, and I don't have a beta-type relationship with any actual Brits. I consult dw_britglish and websites and ask what questions come to me, but I'm not comfortable handing out drafts to people I don't know very well.
Caveat: as I said, I am a pedant, and therefore stuff that bothers me probably wouldn't bother others. I do actually know how hard it is to get all the nuances right, as I used to write in a US-based fandom, and ran up against all the same sort of thing about words and phrases used incorrectly, or cultural references that didn't work. I know exactly what you mean about things it wouldn't occur to me to question. But at least you ask questions and use resources like dw_britglish. I was really referring to those who write as if there's no difference at all between the two cultures, not those who are as careful as they can be about what they write, but get a few subtler things wrong
( ... )
There's a lot of "I guess" on the BBC and Telegraph websites (hey, I use what resources I can), so maybe I'm missing the nuance of the "guess so" usage. Hmm.
(And, no, I wasn't being defensive, just curious :).)
You know. I don't use a brit picker... but my husband is British... so I tend to go "Hey, if I wanted to say this...*insert here*... would I use this? or THIS?" And he'll usually give me one of the two or say "Oh no! Use this! Always this."
Which now makes me curious about the things I HAVEN'T questioned. Hmmmmmm... I mean, I know better than the above mentioned (all of them actually)... but I wonder if there's little American-isms I've shoved in without realizing it.
I will refrain from ranting, as you were (impressively) able to while listing your annoyances. But I completely agree with all five listed, especially the first three.
And your squee moments made me squee while reading them. X)
EEEEEEEEEEE YES! I agree with the squee and the irritations AND the moments! <3
Fantastic moments. I always love seeing what people wouldn't change, since we all spend so much time rewriting or adding to stories we already know and love. :3 I just like knowing there are things out there that... you wouldn't :3
