They Feel So Small (1/1)

Four short continuations of Sonata.

Title: Fool for Stormy Weather
Rating: G
Length: 101 words

The first night after Abel is born, Sam has the carrier set beside his bed. He tells Dean it’s because he wants to see his baby boy more clearly. In truth, it’s so he can gently prod Abel every thirty minutes to make sure he’s still alive, whole, and safe. Each time, Abel fusses for a few minutes before settling back to sleep. Sam smiles to himself and releases a small, relieved sigh before he too goes to sleep, only to awaken thirty minutes later to once again reassure himself. Poke, rinse and repeat. Already, Sam feels like a bad parent.

Title: Dreams are Boats Sailing Away
Rating: G
Length: 105 words

When Abel is three months old, he discovers an amazing part of his body. He has hands, two of them in fact. Instead of sucking on that little blue pacifier his daddy and uncle got him, he can suck on his little fingers until his heart is content. Of course, his perception is still way off and he starts accidentally hitting himself in the face on the way to his mouth. When he starts to cry, his daddy coos, picks him up and places him at his chest. His uncle laughs so hard that his face starts to turn beet red. Abel thinks he likes daddy best.

Title: Falling in Love with a Photograph
Rating: G
Length: 130

At five months, Abel has started developing tiny, little white nubs for teeth. The books Sam has kept in the glove compartment in the car says that annoyance should be expected for the next few weeks (for both the baby and the parents) and to buy a teething ring. They do and it works for the most part. Sometimes it falls out and Abel will start screeching until either Dean or Sam get out of bed to put it back in. Abel also starts to chew anything that’s in front of him, hard. Dean thinks it’s just adorable and waves his little finger in front of his nephew’s face until the baby grabs it and starts chomping. Fingers aren’t as sensitive as nipples apparently, and Sam, who is still breastfeeding, thinks the habit is a little less cute.

Title: The One Who Plays the Piano
Rating: G
Length: 150

Six months of breastfeeding finally gets to Sam and he insists that Abel is now able to move up to solid foods. Dean is hesitant, he’s been reading those baby books Sam gets (although he only reads them when he’s sure Sam is fast asleep) and knows that milk is best for the kid, but Sam is persistent (his brother’s left eye starts to twitch, which scares the hell out of Dean). So they go to one of those crappy organic stores they have all over San Francisco and Sam buys his son expensive, organic, vegan, healthy, green pea goop. Sam feeds it to Abel with a soft, plastic spoon and Abel scrunches up his face, honest to God groans, frowns, and then spits it out. It’s the most entertaining thing Sam and Dean have seen in a while.
