I'll hazard a guess, because I've sometimes felt a similar impulse to comment to someone on fashion or some other aesthetic matter--never acted on the impulse, thank god. Anyway, I imagine he thought he would be complimenting your looks but didn't realize that the form it took would insult your intelligence. Not an excuse, but possibly an explanation. Sorry you had to experience it!

No, he was definitely mansplaining my face to me. And the fact that he presaged it with "have you heard of this guy? [shows book] He found a cure for cancer for his mother!" made me not even a little bit excited about where that was going.

I think "mansplaining my face" was what I was trying to describe, but about 1000x better put! :-)
