I couldn't stay up and watch it cause I had to be up for school. But for the record, I'm glad my country didn't elect the crazies again. Note to Democrats in government: Don't blow it.
Amen. Two years of talking of "hope" and "change". I hope this doesn't go down as the world's biggest letdown when all's said and done. I'm optimistic though.
I'm overwhelmingly elated about the election of Obama. I love how he has no illusions about his term in office being anything less than a nerveracking war on multiple fronts to save us from the horrible mess we're in. He acknowledges that he may not be popular at all times. I also am comforted by the fact that he not only built his campaign from virtually nothing, he built himself. He's a very determined, intelligent, and disciplined fellow. At the very least, we're going to see some effort coming from him. Also unlike Dumbfuck...errr..I mean Dubya, he's not going to fire all the smart people. What worries me is the remaining Republicans in the Senate. If they relentlessly block the efforts of the new Dems (as partisan douchebags are prone to do) we'll have another two years before real change happens.
I am genuinely hopeful. I really am. And that is saying something with how cynical I have become about politics. I expect things to suck hard and I have relatively low expectations of Congress and their likelihood to pass what they should. However, unlike a large portion of America, I say electing an intellectual who spends lots of times thinking things through, plays his opinions close to his chest and THEN acts... is a GOOD thing. I don't want someone I'd "have a beer with" cause I'd rather have a President that goes home sober and early to get things done. I figure that if he holds to what he said, the thing that could be his greatest asset on foreign policy could be a danger domestically - he has indicated a willingness to compromise. I don't want him to compromise with some of those nutjobs in Congress.
Btw, how are you? I'd love to have a chat some time if there is a good time to ring - I never know when is too early or late your time.
So far Obama is hitting the ground running. In the time McCain spent trying to slander Obama in the campaign, Obama had a different mindset. He was more like, "I should really set some priorities and plan my first actions as President Elect." He wasn't obsessing with HOW to win, he was getting ready to start working as soon as he won. You gotta love a self-starter. So far, I like what I see.
Oh yes! I brought my ballot in to school to show students and try to encourage a discussion about why it is important to vote. One 14 year old took a look and said "Who is Barack Obama?" Before I could reply another boy smacked him on the back of the head and said "Where have you been for the last year?!" Then on election day they all came in saying "who won, miss?" and I had to explain that while it was indeed election day, it was still 4am in New York.
That's funny! It's been interesting here for sure. I'm excited to see the changes with a new President...and I love the fact that Rossi LOST the governor's race!!!
