My dad used to be a tool engineer for Otis Elevators (aka United Technologies).
He told me that years ago, the industry made up/down buttons (for the lobbies) that sensed a person's touch by body heat rather than needing to be pressed.
They had to be recalled, because when there was a fire in a lobby by those type of buttons, the heat would activate them and the elevator would go to the floor where the fire, flames and smoke were, and open it's doors.
Yeah. Imagine being on an elevator and being greeted by *that*.
