What with champers for the new princess; juleps for the Kentucky Derby; and a glass or two of the creature raised to mark and mourn the death of the great Ruth Rendell.

(HMQ must be rather torn, now I think of it, between the excitements of the new great-grandroyal, and the races.)

I have a feeling that they may not choose Elizabeth on the grounds that, as 4th in line to the throne, and given the success of previous Elizabeths in the role, this may be an encouragement to regicide.

One Elizabeth presided over the rise of the global empire (or at least the planting of the seed which led to that rise); the other's reign saw its contraction. They neatly bookend the process.

The ultimate choice, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, is IMO a good one. It gives credit and honour where they are due, both to the reigning monarch at the time of her birth and to the babe's late grandmother (who, whatever her public faults, was clearly loved by her son). And while the name Charlotte itself has a strong Royal history, it gives the wee lass her own identity ( ... )
