The Kipling at the beginning is a favorite of mine. It is always in collected verses, but i think it is from 'Puck of Pook's Hill.' Not sure, but I am sure you know.
I am sure that a lot of the cultural references passed me by. But i read it for the story and the luminous writing. Also the Kipling snagged me.
I liked the extended family and community warmth in this piece. You gave them the ongoing damage of the past, but they were working to fix that.
The paragraph about the light and the shadows was plain gorgeous.
