Well, they've gone well beyond the pale, now.

The Argies have filmed an Olympics advert in the Falklands, incidentally desecrating a war memorial. In this, they have been guided by the Yanks at Young & Rubicam, who have crossed a Rubicon with this. The advert and story may be seen here; the Falklands response, here; the contact link for Y&R is http://www.yr.com/contact. I presume their next ( Read more... )

I found this very, very sad. For various reasons.

It also wants a measured response directed to the Argie 'government'.

But of course we should have to fight the Yanks as well. Mr Obama is no friend to the UK.

Isn't war memorial desecration a crime in the Falklands (come to that, is it one in the UK)? If so the Falklands could an issue arrest warrant for Fernando Zylberberg and stop him coming to the Olympics this year (or better yet issue it the first day of the games when he's in London and can't get away). I know the HM Government won't like that much what with the fuss that Argentina would make about it, but the rest of the world governments aren't going to say much about it because how are they going to defend a war memorial desecrater without making themselves look really bad to most of their own people and everyone else in the world? And the HM Government would have to carry out the warrant because from a UK Overseas Territory.

I'm tempted to agree. wemyss May 4 2012, 14:21:58 UTC
But it's not actually the lad's fault off his own bat, and it shd be unsporting.

It's the the memorial desecration I'm angry about and that is "unsporting" if ever there was such a thing, the rest of the video is just free expression (one I don't like but still free expression) but memorial desecration go's beyond free expression. 'Following orders is no defence in law'.

Oh, quite. wemyss May 4 2012, 15:04:05 UTC
I agree all the way 'round. I just wonder if the prudential thing is - not to ignore it, but, rather, to find a different way to express one's disapprobation. (I assure you, my first reaction was bloody-minded in the extreme.)

Simple. Impose an entry visa requirement for every Argentinian citizen and deny them for the next four months. NO Argentinian will go to the Olympics, either as a spectator or a participant. If the IOC have an issue, threaten to shut down the Olympics altogether - and do so, if they try to call your bluff. The dead are more important than a big corporate junket.
