An impertinent question, arising from 'satiable curtiosity

What music, if any, do you listen to when writing?

When editing and proof-reading?

Why?

Ambient music only. I find it slightly hypnotic; it really helps the creative juices. I find any kind of 'regular' music distracting - it steals my attention; the focus is on listening to the music not on the work I'm doing.

I put the iPod on shuffle. This can produce interesting transitions such as Beethoven to Bowie to Beach Boys via Cajun, Klezmer and Meat Loaf.

It's useful because I don't get bogged down on any one thing and don't have to think about what to play next!

Mind you, my iPod is weird. Last April 30 on shuffle it played the whole of "Die erste Walpurgisnacht" straight through twice. Think about it and consider the odds.

When writing Eroicafic, I often listen to two little-known songs, "Adrift" and "Castle in the Sand", which were recorded for a benefit album a few years back. They're both tragic love songs which to me perfectly embody my concept of From Eroica With Love.

Classical, mostly. It makes my brain work more smoothly.
