Creating patterns advice

Apr 06, 2010 21:18

I have a question. I'm currently trying to create my own patterns, but I don't know where to start. For those who create their own pattern, do you have any advices or tip?

Thank you.

Sorry I don't know how you would tag this. >_

One way to start is to simply experiment with how the number and placement of increases and decreases over so many rows changes the shape of what you're making. If you're working with existing patterns, you know how to make round ball shapes and tubes; now you can just play with those shapes to make your own. Change the number of rows or inc/dec and so on. Don't worry about undoing your stitches a lot, it'll help you figure out what shapes you like.

I did a brief search for "bend" in this community, because that seems to be a common free form shaping question and there are many good posts about it. A few that jumped out at me were:
  • facial sculpting
  • question about shapes, which has a couple good links in it, including the sculptural crochet primer
  • and bends, I posted comments to that one about checking out the other forms of crochet, like granny squares/coasters, to learn more about adding texture through the use of techniques like scallops, etc. Also look up filet and tunisian crochet; they're pretty cool techniques that you might find ( ... )

I usually think of the shapes I want and where would be best to start and look around at patterns that are similar shapes and see how those are made/started. Then comes the fun part of experimenting and unravelling a lot until it is the shape I want, but yeah, finding other patterns with similar shapes your going for usually helps just so you can look for the area in the pattern where that shape is made and get an overall idea of what you'd have to do to duplicate it for your own uses. :D

I am trying to write my own patterns too. What I find helpful is to use past pattern as a frame work, and change it up as I go. The other thing is to ask people to test your pattern for you. The thing is that you have to find someone who's reliable to help.

sharing my experience:
I did write a free pattern, and actually beside that one, I had wrote some unpublished patterns, because I don't know wether it is understandable by the user or not.. and writing the instruction is very hard (cause I don't really speak english)

so my tip, maybe you'll need a friend or just somebody to test the pattern before launch it to your shop/web/journal
