Maybe you can try looking at doll patterns and take the head part, such as this one here:
http://stitch.hellooperator.net/free-patterns/amigurumi-doll/amigurumi-doll-pattern-charts/

or this one:

Good luck!

Magic loop tutorial: http://www.crochetme.com/Dec_Jan_0405/reads_round.html

Depends on how big you want it, something like this:

R1: start with 6 sc (I use magic ring method) (6)

R2: *2 sc in each sc* (12)

R3: *sc in first sc, 2sc in 2nd sc* rep around (18)

R4: *sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in 3rd sc* rep around (24)

R5-9 or 10: sc around
(note that you can make it as big as you want by simply following the pattern of increases. Do about the same number of even rounds as you have already done in increase rounds.)

to decrease:

R11: *sc in first 2 sc, dec over 2 in the 3rd sc* rep around (18)

R12: *sc in first sc, dec over 2 in the 2nd sc* around (12)

Probably a good idea to finish stuffing it now...

R13: *dec over 2 around (6)

Then finish it by threading the yarn through the remaining stitches or whatever.

does that help at all?

If you're putting the hook through one loop, you need to put it through both. My single crochet stuff came out funny for a while until I figured that out.

the videos I learned from are on hookandneedles.com
I find videos rather than books easier to learn from
gfexperience, thanks for that tip, it explains how all my stuff is oval shaped! will I have to go through the two loops for every stitch of anything round?

You should be going through both loops for all regular stitches. You should be using front loops only and back loops only when you want the shape to be a certain way
