It's my own design, I've been making a few different kinds so I don't have a set pattern. I'll pm you with a few ideas to get you started if you want to make one for your boyfriend. d^_^b

The hair? Old many-stranded yarn - they're even thinner than sewing thread, so they have a really wonderful fall. :D
... I had to do a quick search on that stitch, never heard the name before - and no, I don't think it's the same. My dictionary says this is called fan stitch - it's very similar, only just the half of the round gets done. Will include a tutorial in the pattern, ok?
ETA: I have a strong suspicion it's supposed to be silk - or a cheaper replica...
