Seriously, though, the quickest way to get a sense of what's happening is to go to the bbc and then to al-jazeera. The truth is somewhere amongst all of that.
On a somewhat related note, there was an Economist article a few months back (or maybe last year, I'd have to dig it up) about how academic research is falling prey to a similar problem of internet search leading to less variety of opinion as more people flock to those publications that agree with their POV. It's an odd, factional response to information freedom and I don't think it has an easy answer. Makes me think of the Federalist Papers...
