What in the world could possibly be better than using the Internet to share your ideas? Having the denizens of the entire Internet tout your ideas as though they are canon. As a fanfiction writer, I fully appreciate the joy in having hundreds of thousands of people believe my interpretation of events to be better and more truthful than canon. Perhaps that is the goal of every fanfic writer.
That would be why I find this so fricking hilarious. What's so strange about the English translation, so to speak, of "A Song of Storm and Fire," you ask? To be frank, there is none. You see, Yuki Kajiura, who wrote the lyrics to this iconic track from the anime Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle's soundtrack, made up the words from a mix of mainly Japanese and Latin. They are nonsense lyrics, not meant to have any particular meaning.
However, about two or three years ago, I went online and found an approximation of what the lyrics sound like. Being a naturally inquisitive and free-spirited kind of girl, I played around with them and made up a translation in English.
Note: I made it up. It is not a real translation because the lyrics are not written in a real language.
I posted my exercise in creative expression on some forum and never went back. Now, years later, I just happened to randomly want to look up the lyrics online. And what do I find? Why, that the Internet has spread my "translation" around like a virus. There are AMVs with my "translation" labeled as the "official" one, plus, as I've already mentioned, numerous lyrics sites that offer the same.
I could be righteously outraged, or I could be helplessly amused. Which do you think is the more appropriate response?
Yeah, me too. I can't stop crying for laughter. This is the best Internet failure I've ever come across in my life, and that includes Neil Gaiman discovering that one of his Sandman quotes is being mistakenly attributed to Shakespeare.
