Today I walked all over Prenzlauerberg, which is one of the former East German neighborhoods. I like it a lot--plenty of neat buildings, fun shops, and of course history. Yep, that was the commie side. The differences are ever smaller. There are definitely still architectural differences, and the people who choose now to live in eastern parts are...in general maybe a little edgier? But that's a huge generalization. The walk/don't walk signals in the eastern neighborhoods are cuter than the capitalist ones; ironically, the capitalists have now exploited this to an almost ludicrous degree--there are entire stores dedicated to selling Ampelmännchen (walk-signal man) stuff. Shirts, bags, t-shirts, pencils, bottle openers, doormats, mugs, erasers, earrings, etc.
