I hope we're gonna see footage of the awards recipients' speeches, especially since not only Johnny but the also woman who'll receive the Equality Award is an awesome person: check out http://www.hrcseattle.org/dinner/speakers.aspx
I'm glad that Johnny hasn't actively taken on the role of activist. I think he helps out gay rights VERY much by not being, how to word this, aggressive? Not that we don't need those people working for us, but you also need people in other roles, who just live their lives openly and set positive examples. I don't know if I'm making sense. :( I just think he really deserves this, even though I know there are going to be asswipes who take offense at him receiving this award because he's not "out".
IA. I love it that he 'speaks out' every now and then but I'm all for letting the ACTUAL ACTIVISTS take the role of activist. They're the ones who (should) actually know what they're doing, after all. It's a good idea that HRC is giving away two awards: the visibility one, which Johnny deserves just by being himself in the public eye, and the equality one, for people who do the important activist work at the grassroots level, away from the media spotlight.
As we used to say a long time ago in the early days of second wave feminism, "the personal is political".
Realistically, speaking...how "out" does a person need to be? Know what I mean? We don't go around harassing straight folks to announce to us that they are straight, after all.
