They first met on a ferry ride in NY. They never got each other’s numbers but helping a total stranger save the life of a young boy impaled by a pole tends to leave a lasting impact.
~
They remembered their first meeting during their first emergency operation in Detroit.
They found they had things in common other than wanting to save people’s lives.
~
Two months into their stint at Detroit Lily walked in on Allison in the middle of a breakdown, and through sobs found out that she had also become a widow at an early age.
~
Allison discovered Lily on the cots having a nightmare; she caught snatches of conversation from the tossing woman.
“Ben… we can’t… you… my boss… never…”
~
When they went out for drinks and Lily started a tirade against dating older men or colleagues, Allison put one and two together and quickly found the picture.
“I think it’s alright you know.” She sipped her beer.
“What?” Lily had replied confused.
“Dating your boss or whatever… I would have done it if I could have…”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. It’s the denial which is unhealthy. That’s why I left Princeton, I just didn’t love the guy I was with enough and I couldn’t be with the guy I loved too much.”
“Yeah.” Lily sighed and took a large swig of her beer.
~
They grew closer over the months, they weren’t best friends but neither had expected a blossoming relationship from the other one. It was good just to live for the moment. Not have to worry about anyone’s expectations. Save a life, go home for tea.
~
Eight months from the start of their time at Detroit’s finest ER it became clear that only one of them would be required now. Allison took Lily aside and encouraged her to stay, citing that even though it was an ER it was just too mundane the work for her here. She’d been used to complicated puzzles and risky business and that she must still be missing that. She’d decided to go help out at a street clinic in the Bronx.
Lily had another idea, “Wait. You want excitement? Why don’t you see if there’s a place left in South America, at my old Clinica!”
Lily managed to set it up with Otis Cole within the week, and found herself saying goodbye to Allison all too soon.
~
“Goodluck. And… say hi to him if he doesn’t flinch when you mention my name, yeah?” Lily pulled her into a hug.
“Sure thing. And I’ll do you one better, if he’s still single, I’ll get him to call you.” Allison grinned.
“No, he’d never go for that. Don’t even waste your breathe on it, Al.”
Allison just smiled back at Lily then turned and walked to board her plane to South America.
