Spoilers for season 3:

They had once called him a good King.

Before Igraine had died, when he was afraid of the crown on his brow and he had a vision for Camelot so many thought impossible because what could come from under the rubble and pain of the endless wars that had littered the countryside for so long. There had been a time when Uther could tell you the exact amount of grain in each storage chamber, and how much a harvest could yield, when he knew the face of commoner and noble alike and although he was a warrior, with the scars to prove it; Uther was looked to broker peace.

And when the Purges came, when they buried Igraine beside her brother and Uther asked for one more death from someone who had been their friend, neighbor and comrade; they allowed him because he made the sacrifice too. They watched as Nimueh was thrown from court and the King’s heart became ice in his chest. They watched as he mounted his war- as his armies pushed relentlessly through shire and home; to protect them, he said, and they wanted to believe him because even through the wars he kept meat in their bellies and their lands defended.

And because they feared him even as they loved him, they called him a strong King.

It’s been a year since they thought to call him strong, or good.

Now, there is nothing that can reach their King, they say- not the chill of winter, or the hunger of his people. Every night, the borders of Camelot are picked at by vultures; both ambitious kingdoms and thieves. But Uther cannot be bothered by such things. His thoughts are not scattered although some may think him so. The people, he reasons, have enjoyed his charity and strength for twenty years. They owe him and there is not one in the Kingdom he would not give for Morgana’s return.

Those who knew him as Knight and not King may marvel at the figure before them- the one who finds no solace in wine, nor regret in his actions. His mind is alight with the possibilities of where she could be, and what is happening to her and no thought of famine, defeat, or Kingdom and duties will drive him from what he would have.

He will have his ward returned to him and if Camelot must burn for it; so be it.

…and now they whisper the King has gone mad.
