John, the head of my department at work, died over the weekend. He had liver cancer, but didn't tell anybody. (I don't blame him a bit for that.  People treat you so differently when they know you're critically ill. His health was fragile anyway, and he would have hated having people fall all over him.) He went in for surgery just before Halloween
