this isn't advice (sorry), but you have just got to read "midnight's children" by salman rushdie! he was the one yann martel (of "life of pi") was compared to. i bet you'll love his book, even if it is long. (some versions have 600+ pages, others have 500+ pages.) i just picked up "life of pi", and the writing style is somewhat similar to rushdie's. please please please read it when you can :)
