The Mainland - Saturday

May 29, 2010 23:18

Trips to the mainland were few and far between for Kyle. The whole point of being in Fandom was to stay in Fandom out of sight, out of mind and out of trouble more or less. Sometimes side trips were necessary and an acceptable risk. Today was one such trip, which had two purposes: a lesson with Jack the detective and a trade with Jack the ( Read more... )

Black market deals probably belonged in dark alleys or in abandoned warehouses. The guy Kyle had a meeting with didn't work that way. The meeting was about five minutes away and would take place in a diner around the corner. Kyle checked the time. "If this works the way it's supposed to work, you won't have to do anything," he told Jack.

Jack nodded once. "And what if it goes wrong?" he asked. "Should I get help, or jump into the fight?"

"Do you know how to fight?"

Jack shrugged. "I don't do it often, but I know enough to take care of myself."

Against a normal human opponent, anyhow. Someone highly trained or with superpowers would make fairly short work of him.

Kyle nodded, formulating a plan. "Do you have a phone?"

"Yes," Jack said, patting his pocket. It was entirely possible he was staying in the 21st century just for the telephones.

"Okay. They run a business. They want to keep a good reputation for repeat customers. I don't see them doing anything in public, but that doesn't mean someone else won't. If you see anything out of place, call me and I'll know it's time to leave. The best thing you can do is make sure they don't know you exist."

"All right," Jack said. He glanced into the diner, then paused at a newspaper box for the useful prop. "I'll be at the counter so I can see the whole room without seeming to look at you."

"Good," Kyle agreed. "Ready when you are."

"That would be now," Jack said, with a slight, excited smile. "I'll go in first."

He slipped toward the diner door, not looking back.

Kyle looked at his watch again and waited so he was able to walk through the door exactly on time. He looked around, taking in every risk, every possible threat, but didn't linger on Jack. The other Jack, the guy he was here to meet, nodded and smiled at him to wave him over.

Kyle walked over and shook the man's hand, then joined him when invited. Their voices were low as they spoke and could be seen shaking his head at the waitress who asked him if he wanted anything.

The conversation appeared to be going fine and came across as casual.

It looked totally normal, and after a few moments Jack let himself eat the pie he'd ordered instead of just picking it apart with the tines of his fork. He was happy to see everything going so smoothly for Kyle.

Another five minutes and Kyle slid out of the booth and stood up, shaking the other man's hand again. He walked outside, not looking at Jack, and stood on the sidewalk near the bus stop sign, pulling out his phone to text Jack. 'Wait 3. Meet where we were before.'

It wasn't long before another man they hadn't seen before came and stood beside Kyle, putting a sports bag down on the ground between them. He checked his watch and the bus schedule attached to the sign pole, then walked away.

Kyle put his phone away and picked up the bag, hefting it and putting the strap over his shoulder before walking away in the opposite direction.

Precisely three minutes later, Jack came around the block from the other direction to find Kyle. He raised his eyebrows slightly at the bag as he fell into step beside him. "Good milkshakes?" he asked in a low voice.

"Best I've had in a while," Jack confirmed. "Anytime you want to go out for milkshakes and pie, I'd be happy to come."
