Bed would have been nice sooner, but Kyle was too wired to sleep. He found himself back at the room anyway. Not knowing whether Alice was in, he knocked lightly and waited. In a moment, he would try the door.
"Come in," Alice called, not looking up from her chess game. She suspected herself of cheating, but she couldn't exactly prove it, and such allegations were in poor taste without firmer evidence.
And anyway, she couldn't play against Dinah, as Dinah was asleep.
Alice's face broke into a wide smile when she saw him.
"I should have to say I am," she said, amazement and shock both coloring her tone. "If you're only stopping in to find a lost wallet, I'm going to be terribly put out."
"I'm staying for now, if you don't mind letting me use this side of the room again." He looked tired and dirty and grimy and a little taller and older and in need a shave (which he never had before). And thin again. Definitely an unhealthy thin.
