I completed 2 two-hour long American Sign Language classes at work. I would love to continue learning it...I really enjoy signing. My deaf coworker teaches us a few signs a week which is nice, so even if I'm not in a structured class, at least I can still learn a little bit by bit ( Read more... )

Are you fluent in sign?

Not fluent, and have less knowledge than I used to. I taught myself in high school, and roomed in college with a girl who was taking it as her language. We had some students from Gallaudet in our classes, so we were able to learn signs that way, as well.

I'm much better at "speaking" than "listening," though, as I'm very much not a visual person, but instead very much a kinesthetic person.

(er, all of which is to say I wish I was, but alas, no.)

I find I'm better at active signing than receptive signing as well. It's weird because with Spanish, I'm better with reception than speaking.

Our church is giving sign language classes, but I'm not able to go this time. My mom signs for our early service. There's not any deaf people in the congregation anymore, but she loves doing it, and it really adds to the service. Most of what I'm familiar with are more religious signs as a result. I have carried on very awkward conversations with deaf people, mainly relying on finger spelling when I don't know the signs.

I'm constantly asking my coworker how to sign whatever I'm finger spelling. Hey, as long as you can communicate in some fashion!
