Tech question for y'all

Sep 03, 2010 20:40

So.

We're in the market for a new wireless router, given that ours is acting up and I'm not entirely confident that I won't end up frying it with the dd-wrt fix.

Any recommendations on a particular brand/type? Any cautions against anything in particular? (I already know that Linksys will not be a favorite...)

We have this brand/model http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-WNDR3300-RangeMax-Wireless-N-Router/dp/B0017TFVUW. It works ridiculously well and we've never had a problem with it.

Yikes! We have a WRT 600N (Linksys) that RK swears by. He likes the D-link as well.

Are you more concerned with speed or range?

If you haven't already checked them out, Maximum PC's web site has a list of their favorite routers. That might be a good place to start.

We've got the (in)famous WRT 54G, which commonly has issues. What we need is something that can handle our Xbox and laptop here in the apartment, so I'm thinking speed will trump range. I'll be sure to check that site, thanks!

Just a thought - buy whatever new router you plan to, but don't open it, and try the dd-wrt fix; if it fries, you've got your new one on hand, and if it works beautifully, you can take the new one back and save some $$. :)

Some of the newer Linksys's are fine, and I've always personally had good luck with Belkin but I know a lot of people haven't so ymmv on that one.

D-Link and Linksys fight to see who makes the lowest quality equipment. Belkin used to beat both of them at that game - but things may change.

That said, I've had an excellent run with a Linksys-N in a corporate office and my own linksys 54G was massively improved by installing DD-WRT firmware.
At the wireless ISP, we use Mikrotik or StarOS equipment ;) (mostly the latter). Probably overkill for what you want though.
