Financial Question

So our wedding budget seems to be coming together slower than we wanted. We're working on selling a vehicle which will help some, but otherwise we've gotten things like "I'll help buy the dress, but won't have the money until after Christmas" when I'd really love to start looking now and potentially buy if I fell in love with something. Is it a ( Read more... )

I don't know. You never know when someone might lost their job and not be able to help unexpectedly. It may be better to count on the money not being there (and it it does, it would be a nice bonus). Do you have any other things in addition to the vehicle that you could sell (or maybe some work online that you could do)?
Best wishes to you, and congratulations on getting married!

If you already have plans to get this card, it's not a terrible idea so long as you know you'll have the means to pay it off whether or not someone is able to pay you back. Unless your financial situation is more stable than it sounds, I personally wouldn't apply for a card just for wedding finances.

My fiancee and I applied for a card with miles to buy our rings and simultaneously get enough miles to fly for our honeymoon (thanks to promotions), but our financial situation is quite stable and we've got the means to pay it off.

They may not come through with the money. If this is the case, are you screwed? If you can pay it off on your own, go for it. If not, I wouldn't. I haven't touched my credit cards to pay for this wedding (yet). I've paid cash for everything. This way, I know I am not spending beyond my means.

Don't! My step dad kept saying he would pay for my dress but it would take a few months. I was deciding between the dress I really wanted or one that was nice, but half the cost. So after a few months, I went ahead and paid for the dress myself. I was afraid that it wouldn't be around when he finally gave me the money. I was thinking he would pay me back eventually and then I would still have the extra money for my wedding. Well, my dress was paid for over the course of 3 months, and it took about 3 months to arrive. In that six months, I have yet to see a dime from my step dad. So I spent $1150 on a wedding dress when our total budget is $6000! I thought I would get the money back and it would be no big deal, but nope! While I cant say I regret it, because I love my dress. I wish I would have tried to negotiate the price down or something. I didn't think it was an issue since I wasn't technically paying for it.

I had already looked at dressed when he offered. He asked me about the two dresses I liked and how much each was then he told me that he would buy me the one I really liked. So he knew the cost before he offered to pay for it. He said he would just give me the cash so I know he wasn't planning on negotiating with them.I told him before I paid for it too so he knew I was going to go ahead and pay for it.

Also, I had been babysitting for him for free for several months in exchange for him helping with the dress. He didn't ask, but I told him not to worry about paying me for sitting because he was helping with the dress. I normally charge him about $10 an hour. At that rate, my sitting would have paid for about half the cost of the dress at this point. He stopped asking me to sit for him a few months ago, I think because he didn't plan on helping me with my dress anymore.

If you are sure that you will get the money, or have another way to pay off the credit card if you don't get the money, then it is an ok idea. However, if you aren't completely sure you will get the money and wouldn't be able to pay off the credit card on your own, it is risky and could lead to paying a good amount of interest on the purchases you make with that credit card.
