STD's are nice for out of towners or anyone who might have a tight schedule, so that they can plan further out than the 6-8 weeks that invites are sent out.

But if everyone is local and you all talk and spread the word around, then you don't really NEED them. We got engaged at 9 months out, so we sent ours as soon as they were ready (about 8 months out). So I would say around 10 months is good.

The time lines from the Knot and such day 8-9 months out for the STDs. I'm planning on sending mine out for our August 11th, 2012 wedding next January. Like the previous poster said, STDs are for people who would be coming from out of town but lots of people are sending them out to people even if they're local.

You don't need them, but if you're worried about people not having enough time, you can send out emails

In my never humble opinion, Save the Dates are completely unnecessary unless you are planning a destination wedding. They can be fun and an alternative to engagement announcements, but superfluous really. If you want to, go for it. I honestly think that a lot of wedding resources make it sound like you have to send them out, because they are another way to make money.

STD are totally optional.

WOM is convenient, personal, and way cheaper :)
