Size of centrepiece?

So I'm trying to figure out our centrepieces, and having a hard time deciding what size I want them. (I have the charger-type base, which is 13"x13", so I'm just talking the main piece.) We're doing flowers, but actually planted ones rather than cut. I'm looking at cube or cylinder vases to basically be planters, maybe about 5-6"? The flowers ( Read more... )

Centerpiece twins! :D We've got yellow pansies and purple petunias growing happily away outside, waiting for their big debut in *gulp* just over 2 weeks.

We just picked up ~12" plastic pots from the dollar store. We've got opaque cellophane wrap and ribbon to decorate 'em up real nice (and make sure they don't leak water on the tables!), and the little plastic holders for our table markers.

We're also doing morning glory starts for our favors; I've actually got to set the seed to soak tomorrow for planting on Saturday. I am inordinately excited about getting these started, for I am a flower dork. :P

Wow - 12"? That's way bigger than I was looking at...wonder I'm looking too small?

Well, a lot depends on what sort of flowers you're using. The petunias we have are a Wave variety, and after 2 weeks, they're already starting to creep over the edges of the pots. They'll be spilling over quite a bit by the time W-Day comes along; smaller containers would've choked the poor things, and even as it is, they'll probably need to be re-potted into larger spaces or outright planted into the ground.

The pansies are a bit smaller, so we've got 2 per pot; they still need a pretty decent amount of space for their root system. The small planters you want will probably do alright for seedlings or flowers that are still near the beginning of their growth. But if you're planning on them being in there for several weeks, they'll probably need more space to be healthy.

No - basically they'll get put in there for the wedding, and then the next week moved out to our garden. We have to buy them for the wedding (May 21), not pre-grow them, since there's still snow on the ground here! :-)
