DJ Questions

So, we're waffling on the subject of a DJ. We have friends with lighting/sound equipment, and we have a giant digital music library. I've seen a number of comments regarding weddings that say "Oh, you have to have a DJ, otherwise no one will dance and have fun", but those all seem to be on sites of wedding planners or DJs. ;-) Of the weddings I ( Read more... )

The tag is hidden under "music: dj". :-) There's also a "music: do-it-yourself" tag if you might go that way.

Strange - the Firefox search didn't even return it. Wonder why... Anyway, I'll tag now, and peruse as well. Mind if I leave it up to get current opinions? Anything involving technology tends to change pretty rapidly. :-)

My cousin had a DJ last spring, and no one danced besides a small handful of people.

I had a DJ last summer, and it seemed like everyone but a handful of people were dancing.

It all depends on the type of music and how it's presented! It seemed really slow with lots of breaks in between songs at the first wedding last year, while my DJ had really smooth transitions between songs.

My experience is that how much dancing there is at a wedding depends mostly on time of day (more dancing at evening weddings), presence of alcohol (some people need a drink to get on the dance floor), and age of the crowd (younger people dance more). A good DJ can encourage the party feel, but a good playlist will do you just fine. If you're not excited about a DJ, have access to equipment and need to save cash, I think skipping the DJ is a great choice.

This. Evening weddings with alcohol and a younger crowd will usually get everyone dancing as long as there is music playing. Not to say that older crowds won't dance, but the younger the group the more dancing there seems to be.

We had an itunes reception and people danced. It all depends on your guests and the music you choose to play.

Two of my closest friends didn't have DJs, but just rented a sound system and had an ipod reception - both weddings were a blast. It was nice - they handpicked every song, so there were no duds, no chicken dance, nothing where you say "This does not fit the wedding/the bride and groom AT ALL", no cheesy DJ.
