For those of you who had or are planning on having a non-friend, non-family member officiant for your wedding... How did you go about finding and hiring him/her? FH and I are secular, and have no idea where to look for one. I tried the almighty internet, but I can only find results in big cities that are far away. Sunday weddings are getting more and more common and consecuently, officiants are more used to working on Sundays.

Since you're looking for a secular officiant, it shouldn't be too hard. I'd start by asking your venue; they're bound to have some good recommendations.

And in response to your ETA: I simply MUST have those shoes in bronze! Good choice; plus I've heard that Rocketdog shoes are comfy.

I had a Sunday wedding.. I got married in Chicago though so there were lots of choices for officiants... I just googled and picked the one I liked after communicating.

Also you can ask the Justice of the Peace in your town. He or she may be available or know someone who could do it for you.

The local judge (small upstate NY town) was willing to come to our reception site to lead the ceremony there, and we found that contact info by googling the town courthouse.

You might also consider searching for "celebrant". You'll have to check your town laws, but the celebrants I came across when I was looking in upstate NY (which has pretty tough laws about who can perform a legal marriage, one qualification of which is being a leader in a religious community) were often ministers or ex ministers associated with progressive religions, who were very willing to lead completely secular ceremonies at non-church locations.

I contacted the court house and asked the secretary if any of the judges would perform a wedding on the weekend and she gave me the names and method of contact for the options. It was pretty easy :)

This. Except when I called the courthouse, she went ahead and scheduled the JoP for me. A week before the wedding we saw the judge and gave him what we wanted him to read for our ceremony.
