I have heard from a lot of people that prenatal vitamins are very good for your hair. And hey, they're good for you anyway, so long as you don't overdose on them...

I've also had a lot of luck with Aussie's 3-Minute Miracle conditioner in weekly treatments. Wash your hair, squeeze as much of the water out with a towel as you can, apply the conditioner for 3-15 minutes, then rinse it out. Your hair absorbs more conditioning agents when it's not sopping wet.

The best thing for your hair and nails is prenatal vitamins. If it won't freak your FH out, I'd start taking those. ;)

If prenatal vitamins aren't an option for whatever reason, grab a B vitamin complex from your local health food store (NOT the grocery/drug store, they don't absorb as well) which is high in folic acid and biotin.

are pre natal vitamins prescription only? If so, how did you ask your ob/gyn for them, seeing as how I wont be pregnant haha

No, you can just buy them. It's a good idea to start taking them 3 months before you get pregnant anyway so that they're already in your system, which means they have to be generally available.

Your local health food store will have a selection. I tend to like vitamins based on whole foods as I find that they have the best absorbtion, but the staff of the store should be able to give you recommendations.

PS, this is the brand I'm using now (I'm just taking the normal multi, not a pre-natal) and really liking.

I have been taking these from GNC and they're great. I highly recommend them. I've taken prenatal but I've read a couple of things that say non-pregnant women shouldn't really take them.

I use Biotin, you can get them at Wal-Mart and they're really cheap (like a couple bucks for a good size bottle. I've been using them since about May and I still have enough pills for another two months I think (the directions say take 1-5 pills a day, I only take 1 but recently have been taking 2 a day). They were recommended by my hairstylist...I can't say for certain how well they are working but I haven't noticed anything bad and my stylist said my hair had grown quite a bit. It grows pretty fast anyway, but I had having trouble with my hair shedding a lot. This was mostly due to being on the wrong thyroid medicine, but I am sure the Biotin has also helped. I haven't noticed any bad side effects.

What will help your hair most really depends on what you are missing.

For me I take a regular multi-vitamin, extra iron and biotin.

My general practitioner had told me I was low on iron, and that it was common among young women, but of course I didn't actually *do* anything about it until it started impacting my hair and my dermatologist repeated my gp's advice. If you are low on iron as well, slow-release iron tablets will definitely help - but you can OD on iron, so do not take it if your iron levels are high. (Also, do not take at the same time as calcium tablets as the calcium will interfere with iron absorption.)

Biotin my dermatologist recommended as just generally good for hair growth.

If you are looking for more resources, you could also check out the memories over at longhair as discussions about supplements come up rather often there.
