How far in advance did you order your cake (if you went through a bakery)?  I called the place we plan to order through and they said about 2-3 weeks ahead.  Obviously if that's what they said it's right, but I'm a nervous nelly and I do everything far in advance(plus the knot.com tells me to do everything way early it seems).  It makes sense ( Read more... )

I think we ordered 4 months in advance. Our thing was custom made, so we had to give them some time for the design concept etc.

It's good to book the date a while in advance at least, especially if it's a popular wedding day/time of year (Saturday/summer). That way the caterer can plan how many cakes it's feasible to bake that week and not get overbooked.

It kind of depends on the type of cake you're doing. If you're doing a big, complicated tiered cake kind of thing, I'd order it a little earlier than that, but if you're just getting something simple, of the type that bakeries do all the time, a couple of weeks out is probably fine. Our cake was provided by our venue, but I think doing it 3-4 months out is pretty common.

You should be able to call your baker and change your order. They only bake the cake 1-2 days in advance, and need a final headcount about 3-7 days prior to the wedding. Additionally, just request that your catering staff cut large slices for your guests - we purposely ordered a cake that was sized for 150 guests even though we knew we'd only have 115 there. :)

Yes, this! We are ordering extra servings so people can enjoy bigger pieces. On one baker's website, I read that a typical wedding slice is only a 1x2" rectangle! WTF?! That's just teasing people!

Every baker I went to said they needed minimum 30 days, preferably more.
So while it's a relief to book things as early as possible, you definitely have plenty of time.
