we just did our registry and got a call for my mom saying people were complaining we didn't have enough expensive stuff on our registry... so make sure you put enough expensive items on your registry for close friends or relatives. we are registered at 2 places.
I think pretty much anything is OK for a registry. That being said, I DO think it's odd to see the following: VERY personal items, hygiene items, grocery-type products [I've seen boxes of candy, ziploc bags and hand sanitizer on registries!], etc
( ... )
Bloomingdale, Kohls, Crate&Barrel, JCPenny, PotteryBarn, Williams-Sonoma, Target and Macys are all partnered with The Knot for registries.
As for us, we have 3: Bed Bath & Beyond (which has our china registry), Target and Sears. We wanted to make sure at least one of our stores would be near every guest, and those all have online options as well. We tried to do a mix of expensive and cheaper items on all 3.
I personally am not a fan of honeymoon registries and would prefer to send a physical gift. If I have to fly to the wedding, I like online stores that let me ship the gift directly to the recipient rather than pay for shipping here and then have to carry it on the plane.
Having multiple registries is a great idea. I usually order my gifts online, but most people still go to B&M stores and you're giving them the chance to go to the store that's closest to them. Also, in my experience Target and Macy's have different price lines, so your less affluent college friends would probably prefer Target both for proximity and for price.
I think just about any kind of houseware qualifies as a gift that you can put on the registry - bedding, kitchenware, curtains, whatever. So bedding yes, and face trimmer IMO yes too.
I put a bunch of odd stuff on my registries that I don't expect people will buy, just because of that discount at the end. It's stuff that I want and would like to get anyways. So far I have Macy's for the bigger stuff like bedding, Williams Sonoma for the All Clad pots I love so much (I nearly set fire to my house growing up with my mother's All Clad pots she got when she got married. Still fabulous. Seriously. All Clad forever.) and Target for lots of little things and bigger things I'm okay with being cheap like bookshelves.
We're already living together and have most of the necessities, but I've just been putting stuff I want and don't have (like a crock pot), or have and want a better version (like the cookware, and a fancy alarm clock), or have and want more of (like sheets and blankets).
